Relationships are so important.
Time is the one thing, there is never enough of. A time to work, a time to play, a time to be with others, a time to relax and a time to sleep. There are work chores, home chores and the things we like to do. Sometimes what we do is weather dependent and sometimes what we do, depends on others. 24 hours a day seems like a lot at first, but it really isn’t. Of course, the days run into weeks, the weeks into months and the months into years. Time just keeps ticking by.
I recently performed with the duo. I play acoustic and cover main vocals, while the other half plays sax and sings harmony. We do covers and originals, anything from Cash to Maroon 5. It’s a lot of fun and a chance meet new people and audience test originals. The people that attend live music gigs are pretty special. Sometimes, they are pleasantly surprised when there is live music and sometimes, it’s the reason they are there in the first place.
The more I perform, the more I recognize people from previous gigs, which is a great feeling. During the performance with the duo, three guys walk into the venue waving at me from a distance. This usually means, they either know me through social media, a previous gig or we have met in the past. This particular group happened to be three people I graduated high school with. What an awesome surprise. For some background, we were not the cool kids, we were certainly not the smartest, none of us were extremely handsome, but we did have a lot of fun.
That night meant a lot because we not only graduated together, but we also shared a brotherhood through those many years. Of course, staying in touch got difficult, but we did manage to occasionally. Many of you know I am a singer-songwriter, but what you may not know, is one of my favorite songs is based on this very group of guys, growing up together, doing some really dumb things and making our way into the world. That song is Life Sure Ain’t What it Used to Be. This is the first time that group had ever heard the song. It’s an audience favorite and a staple in my setlist. Life’s just makes you smile when the pieces fall together. We chatted for quite a while after the gig, catching up on all sorts of topics. I won’t ever forget that night.
Remember the people that made you who you are and thank them for the assist.
