Sometimes things are not always rosy.
According to Oxford languages, friction is the resistance that one surface or object encounters when moving over another. There is another type of friction and that is, the type that can develop between people.
I recently read an article published by AmericanSongwriter.com It was about Daryl Hall and John Oats, who were one of the most successful duos of all time. Their songs are so iconic, songs like You Make My Dreams, Kiss on My List and Private Eyes. The article talks about a riff between the two and what started it.
The duo toured worldwide for over five decades and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014. The tensions between the two came to a head in 2023 when Hall filed a lawsuit against Oates, who wanted to sell part of their song catalog to Primary Wave Music. Hall even went a step further and filed a restraining order against Oates. The article goes on to say that Hall wanted to get away from the drama and politics of the music industry and focus on his music.
One of the things I admire about Hall and Oates is that they wrote a lot of their own songs, either individually or together. What I didn’t know was it was more of a business partnership than a real friendship. Even their performances were more of a job. It made me wonder about other bands and performers (local and famous) and whether or not these groups had a similar relationship. From my own personal experience, conflicts or differences of opinion between band members can be resolved and in most cases, the music is enough to hold it together. However, in some cases it was not possible and that is when a band member parted ways.
Music can fix a lot of things and when the music is not enough, then it’s time to move on. Have a great day.
