DID YOU KNOW…

Mike Lucey on a Porch Rocker

Did you know there is actually a lot behind that little image you see when streaming a song?

Here’s what I mean. First, someone has to take multiple images to capture the perfect shot. Second, the song artist or producer needs to choose a single image, which represents the song visually. After the image is selected, then comes the Music Meta data. What is Music Meta data? According to Sound Charts Blog, it’s the identifying data embedded in a music file. There are three parts to Music Meta data, the descriptive Meta data, the ownership and performance rights Meta data and the recommendation Meta data.

What are some common pieces of Meta data? The Artists name, the song release date, the song genre (meaning Country, Rock, Pop, etc.), track number, cover art, and song title. So what is so important about ownership and performance Meta data? This is how the artist, songwriter and performer get paid when you stream a song.

So the next time you see that little image next to your favorite song, think about all the data that image contains. Have an awesome day. Cheers!
