BEHIND THE SONG - YOU AND ME

Mike Lucey at a Museum with a Guitar.

There is always a back story.

Let’s talk about the background of this song. You and Me is a one-sided conversation between two people who are a perfect fit for each other. The song was an easy write for me, as it’s based on my wife and I and our life together. The activities throughout the song are things we have done as a couple.

Let’s look at the chorus, which starts the song out strong. It reinforces the title with a lot of repetition and the first lyric line ends with Perfect together, setting up the listener with the main idea of the song. The line Such a nice sweater is a lyrical masterpiece of me poking fun at myself. Sometimes, I miss the simplest of things, like my wife getting a haircut or a new piece of clothing. Such a nice sweater is a sudden realization that something is new.

[Intro – Music]
That’s you and me. Perfect together.
That’s you and me. Such a nice sweater.
That’s you and me. Laughing in the sunshine.
You and me. Glad I made you mine.

If we look at the first verse, we find a variation on the theme of Perfect together with the lyric Good together. The verse goes into some of the activities the couple goes through like Dinner at a sports bar, Driving a fast car and Worshipping the moonlight. Worshipping the moonlight is simple a play on words indicating nighttime. The lyric The church bells ringing is a peak into the future of the couple getting married.

[Verse 1]
Good together, like the same weather,
Burning in the sunlight,
Worshiping the moonlight,
Dinner at a sports bar,
Driving in a fast car,
In the park swinging,
The church bells ringing.

Verse 2 continues describing the activities the couple goes through. Hanging on a porch chair Or loving that country air conveys the imagery of a couple hanging out on a porch just enjoying each others company and nature.

[Verse 2]
We can out biking,
Around a trail hiking,
Laughing at the same jokes,
Worried about going broke,
Not the same high,
Loving our movie nights,
Hanging on a porch chair,
Or loving that country air.

The bridge takes the song on a small departure, in that it walks the listener through time as the couple ages. Hair’s turning gray, Talking in the same way are both things that occur as couples grow old together. Thinking about the future and Looking at the bluebirds reinforces that theme and provides some imagery of bluebirds and perhaps the couple sitting on a bench in a park.

[Bridge]
Dinner on a Monday,
Church on a Sunday,
Kissing in the daylight,
Going to get it right.
Hair’s turning gray,
Talking in the same way,
Thinking about the future,
Looking at the bluebirds.

The song finishes strong and takes it home with the final lyrics repeating You and me, Glad I made you mine.

[Outro]
You and me. Perfect together.
That’s you and me. Talk about the weather.
That’s you and me. Drinking in the daytime.
You and me. Glad I made you mine.
Glad I made you mine.
Glad I made you mine.

You and me is just one song of many on my songwriting journey.
