Reflecting back can be a little cathartic.
Songwriting is all about experiences. They can be experiences that we have personally had, the experiences of those around us or even the experiences we create in our minds based on our observations of others. The beauty is that by sharing our thoughts and feelings through song, we can provide a path to making someone feel better if they are in a similar situation or maybe even create a little nostalgia. My song Already There is meant to be a nostalgic look back in the past. Let's get into it.
Already There is based on my own personal experiences, which made it a fairly easy write. The first verse lyrics go like this - They say a mirror reflects what's already there, I've come a long way upon a hill, I think about you on the night I swear, That moment in time, when time stood still. This is a look back at myself and where I am in life. Climbing the hill, is literally going through life and all its ups and downs. The person I am talking about with the lyric - I think about you on the night I swear, That moment in time, when time stood still - is the first time I met my wife to be and describing how I felt at that moment.
The second verse continues my thoughts back to when I first met her with the lyrics - That first meet was funny, the second a show, You thought I'm ok, and I turned out fine, That first date turned into many more, I had someone to share my time. We laugh about our first meet as she thought I was ok. Needless to say I had some work to do. As time went on, we got to know each other. My lyric - You thought I'm ok, and I turned out fine, is really the resolution of getting to know each other and I turned out fine, simply means I graduated from ok.
The chorus sends it home with the following lyrics - Memories keep floodin' back to me, I'm already there, I'm already there, Time keeps driftin' back in time, I'm already there, I'm already there, Thinkin' back through a younger mind. The lyrics are now coming back to the current time and reflecting on how memories are really all we have when we get older. Sometimes they can be very emotional. The lyric - Thinkin' back through a younger mind, is a testament to the idea that as we age the outside of our bodies may look different however, the inside is still frozen in time. I like to say I'm still an 18-year-old on the inside. It's really a state of mind.
