The 5 most important things I’ve learned.
When I first started on this journey, I never expected to hit this moment. My very first blog article was just a thought. I wondered if anyone would be interested in a quick read on anything music related. Topics ranged from songwriting helpful hints, to new gear, to common situations as a gigging musician. Today, I wanted to share the 5 most important things I’ve learned. Let’s get into it.
Number 5 - Everything you do builds on your experiences and makes you better. I am truly amazed that just when I am ready to give up, I have an aha moment. Keep the faith.
Number 4 - Performing is a commitment just like any other. When it comes to show time and you are not at your best, there’s a decision to be made. Continue on with the show or cancel. I think most of us love to perform so the decision is always a tough one. If you are a singer and you can’t sing, it’s pretty simple. If you have a slight cold, it’s a different story. I think most people would continue the gig. Honor your commitments.
Number 3 - A tribe of musicians provides accelerated growth and inspiration through shared experiences, feedback, networking, and friendships. Building a strong support system within the music community, leads to less pressure and more satisfaction. So, appreciate those connections and say thank you, they make you better and you make them better.
Number 2 - When it’s time to perform, be a professional and give it your all. People expect and deserve your best. Interact with the audience and provide them a great experience. When on break, take time to walk around and thank the patrons for coming out. At the end of the gig, say goodbye to the staff and thank them for the opportunity. Always be humble and kind.
Number 1 - As we approached the end of our tour, we stopped in an area filled with screw machines. The machines were not very big, but they made very precise, small and intricate parts. When I looked up I saw a man looking at me from behind his machine. I couldn’t believe my eyes, it was my grandfather looking at me and smiling. How cool is that? Remember the moments that made you.
