Great lyrics make a difference.
Andrea Stolpe is a multi-platinum songwriter, performing artist and educator with 5 simple steps to writing great lyrics. Lyrics form the backbone of every song and writing them, is one of the most challenging parts of songwriting. We are constantly checking to make sure the story line is clear, a rhyme scheme is followed and they are easy to sing.
STEP 1 is to anchor the song in a small lived moment. Simply stated, focus the song on a single moment or situation. Even though songs tell a story, there are only three minutes to do so. Being right to the point and concise is key. Using the five senses - sight, sound, taste, touch and smell will help you build a rich story for your listener. When initially writing the lyrics, don’t worry about rhyme, it’s more important to get the story right.
STEP 2 is to read lyrics like they were poems. Try this, take a song from your favorite artist and just read the lyrics. You’ll notice that the verses build to the chorus and there is a clear hook contained within the chorus. You will also notice that the lyrics are simple, focused and concise. It’s easy to write lyrics that go off on a tangent, but much harder to keep on task. You now have a great example for use as a reference.
STEP 3 is to write like you talk. Your songs will be so much better, if you write like you’re having a conversation with a friend. They will have an authentic and honest feel about them, making them instantly more relatable.
STEP 4 is to keep it compact. Writing each verse with only 4 to 6 lines will keep the song more concise and less apt to lose focus and meaning. Now, create a chorus that repeats at least one line. Reviewing what you have written and checking for alignment is so much easier, when it’s short.
STEP 5 is to collaborate with people you admire. Collaboration brings new ideas and fresh perspectives. It also teaches us, how others view and think about song creation. Everyone uses a slightly different process, so step out of your comfort zone and try collaborating.
Andrea Stolpe’s 5-step process is simple and easy way to keep your writing aligned. Songwriting is a life-long learning process, so keep learning and keep writing.
