Have you ever noticed the same song themes keep coming back?
Popular song themes like heartbreak, love and rebellion seem to keep coming back. Somehow we don’t seem to mind it. I think it’s because the songwriter has done his job and put a twist on the theme to keep it fresh. So how do you keep your songs fresh? Here are some ideas.
Gather your ideas from far, wide, old and new. These will help diversify your story content. For example, you could talk about a love like Romeo and Juliet. This example goes back in time and marries it to the modern. Take it a step further and put your own experience into the equation. There is no one else like you, which also makes your story as unique as you.
Just like you are unique, why not pair up with someone else just as unique and collaborate on a song. You will find that two heads are better than one and that the song has a better opportunity to become something really special. Chances are, you’ll create a new take on your theme.
Change your perspective. Simply write from a different angle. Instead of writing about falling in love, write about watching someone falling in love. You could also write about someone falling in love with you. Change it up.
Start your song with a different rhythm. Sometimes that can lead to song inspiration. I find that words, rhythms and melodies are all tied to each other. Change any one and the others change too. Be crazy on your rhythms. I tend to play around with multiple chord progressions and love syncopation.
