DEEP CUT…

What is a Deep Cut?

Music is released differently now than it was 20 years ago. However, a good song is still a good song, you just might have to look a little harder. Recently, a lyric from a song caught my attention. The song was Take Her Home by Kenny Chesney. The lyric was Touch Tune to some old Deep Cut Cheap Trick. So what is a Deep Cut?

According to Uncoveringsound.com there are seven traits that make up a Deep Cut song. In general, a Deep Cut song is a lesser-known song by an artist. The first trait or quality is that the song has never or rarely gets performed live. The second is that it receives little to no air play, because it’s not a commercial hit. The third trait is that the song is only known to the most devoted fans of the band or artist. The fourth is that the song was never published as a single. The fifth trait is that the song is considered brilliant and that most fans have never heard of it. It’s like the best song you’ve never heard. The sixth trait is that the song gets overshadowed or lost in the shear volume of songs published by the artist (also referred to as the artist song catalog). Finally, the last trait is that the song is one of the older songs from the artist.

This reminds me a lot about buying the latest album from a favorite band and how side one had all the hits heard on the radio. Side one was also called the A Side. For those of you that don’t know, to allow for more songs on an album or record, the record could be flipped over and the second side or B side played. The term B Side has also become synonymous with the lesser-known hits of the artist. So, it would seem, Deep Cut and the B Side may have a lot to do with each other.

So the next time you are listening to your favorite artist, on an album or streaming, take the time to listen to their older songs. You might be surprised on how much you like them. You might even find a Deep Cut. Have an awesome day.
