Like most things, songwriting continues to evolve.
One trend that I thought that was interesting is use of a Post Chorus. So, what exactly is a Post Chorus? According to BMI a post chorus is a short section that follows the chorus. It has a different melody than the chorus and includes a memorable hook (think catchy).
So, what are some common traits of a Post Chorus? There is not a lot of new information presented and many times there are few lyrics. Nonsense words such as Oh’s, Ooh’s and Ah’s are common. A Post Chorus is typically short and may only be 8 bars long.
So what are some song examples: Can’t Stop this Feeling by Justin Timberlake. Notice the section at 2:51 where it repeats, I Can’t Stop The and has an Oh Yeah thrown in. This is the Post Chorus, which is catchy, just not quite as catchy as the chorus. Another example of a song using a Post Chorus is Roar by Katy Perry. Notice the section at 1:30 where she goes into a series of Oh Oh Oh’s she repeats this after every Chorus, which is actually maybe even a little catchier that the chorus. One last example is Fancy Like by Walker Hayes. This is one of the first songs I heard using a Post Chorus and it starts at 0:57 in. It says Fancy Like Oh three times.
A Post Chorus is just another way to take your song to the next level and add even more excitement. Nice to add another tool in the toolbox isn’t. Have an awesome day. Cheers!
