Making repairs and adjustments feels good.
It was once normal practice to tune up a car by changing the points, distributor cap and spark plugs, making it run great. The same is true with a guitar, especially an acoustic guitar. Performing on a continual basis, creates wear and tear and regular maintenance, makes it play better and last longer.
I perform with both a Martin HD28 dreadnaught and a Breedlove Jeff Bridges signature dreadnaught. They’re both equipped with the LR Baggs Anthem hybrid pickup system with Tru mic technology. In my opinion, this is the best pickup system for reproducing a true acoustic sound in a live music setting. I love both of these guitars and they each have a unique sound. The Martin is the traditional dreadnaught sound and the Breedlove has a brighter, yet more rounded punchy sound. Each is targeted to specific songs.
I recently dressed the frets on the Martin with good results. The process of fret dressing re-levels the frets removing the wear caused by strings. I did however notice a slight string buzz performing and was able to eliminate the buzz by identifying the fret that was causing the issue. I used a fret rocker to identify the high fret and a fret kisser, to lower that fret. I polished the fret and was back in business.
My Breedlove is a lot newer guitar and the frets show little wear however, I recently heard a slight fret buzz. The temporary fix was to raise the action slightly with a neck adjustment. I recently had some time and used the fret rocker to identify the problem fret. This time two frets were slightly high. I used the fret kisser to lower the two high frets and then polished them. The last step was to adjust the neck to bring the string action back to where I like it, low E at about 0.080” and high e at about 0.060”. I played the guitar and immediately smiled, it felt brand new again.
If you are a little brave and willing to learn, maintaining your guitar can be very satisfying however, it does require an investment in tools. Other repair and maintenance options include your favorite music store or luthier.
