I’M JUST A GOOD GUY…

Mike Lucey on Porch Rocker

Good guys do win.

Here’s some background for today’s article. I started back into performing six years ago and have steadily worked at building a following through live performing, songwriting and releasing my music to the world. It’s been a lot of fun and certainly very challenging. As most of you know, I like to talk to audience members during breaks at my performances. I really enjoy talking with folks that are local or not so local and it provides me an opportunity to see how I am doing in terms of my performance. I find it interesting and very informative with the feedback I receive. One piece of feedback I received just blew my mind, in a good way.

A group of individuals who I know, came into the venue, which was an awesome surprise. They were all smiles and waved to me as they made their way in. Talk about a nice boost to a gig. I went on break after a few more songs and then walked over to talk with them. Right away they were all hugs and smiles, which is really cool. One of the group introduced me to one of her friends, who I had not met before and said you’re gonna love Mike. Which I thought was cool and then her friend simply asked why. The response I heard touched my heart. She said because Mike is not only an awesome performer, he is a great guy. He is the Real Deal. After a comment like that, it just confirms why I do this. It’s really about the connections to people and music is the medium. It spurs great friendships.

That same night I was packing up my gear and noticed an elderly patron sitting in a chair off to the side. She has been to my performances before and is a super sweet Lady. She actually reminds me of my grandmother. As time went on, I noticed she was looking at her phone and looking around the lobby. It was clear she was waiting for a ride. I then noticed what I would consider a worried look on her face. I stopped packing my gear and went over to talk to her. I asked if she was waiting for a ride and she said yes and was not sure why her ride hadn’t come yet. I told her I needed to finish packing up, but if she needed a ride home, I would take her. I completed packing up and she came over to me and said she would take me up on my offer. I loaded up my car and helped her into the front seat. We chatted in the car on the way to her apartment. When we arrived, she thanked me for the ride. I waited for her to open the door and get inside her apartment before I left. It was pretty dark outside.

The moral of this story is to believe, be a good person and your heart will be full. That is how you win. Have an awesome day my friends. Cheers!
