Playing guitar is a lot of fun and hearing it sometimes requires an amplifier. So, how do you choose the right one? Let’s find out.
Purchasing an amplifier can be a little overwhelming considering the many options available. Let’s first start out with some questions that will help us narrow the field. What’s the best amp for my type of guitar? For example is your guitar and acoustic an acoustic/electric or an electric guitar? Where do you plan on playing your guitar? Your bedroom, a small night club or up on the big stage? What type of music will you play? Soft pop or folk, rock and roll or heavy metal?
If you have an acoustic guitar or an acoustic/electric guitar you will most likely appreciate an amplifier specifically made for acoustic guitars. The tone and settings will be more biased to the type of pickup system used in these guitars. To amplify an acoustic guitar that doesn’t have a pickup, a sound hole pickup is the simplest and easiest to install. It comes with a microphone input and effects on both channels. I have the previous generation of this amp and it’s amazing the amount of sound and clarity this small amp puts out.
If you play an electric guitar and need a simple practice amp the Fender Mustang LT 25 25-watt 1 x 8-inch Combo Amplifier is a great choice. For small to medium size venues you can’t beat the Boss Katana-50 Gen 3 50-watt 1 x 12-inch Combo Amplifier. I have the Gen II version of this amplifier and love it. It has both great clean and dirty tones and pushes a lot of sound.
All of these amplifiers provide great sound at various price points and this is just a small sampling. There are larger and more powerful amplifiers available as well however, the price point moves up accordingly. There has never been more choice and more selection to find your tone and create the magic. Do your research, talk to your musician friends and ask for opinions.
