You know some instruments just command a lot of respect and one of those is the saxophone.
One of the first players that comes to mind for me, is Clarence Clemons from Bruce Springsteen’s E Street band. He had such a signature sound, it made me want to go out and buy a sax and learn to play just like him. Have you ever considered learning the sax? It’s a noble endeavor for sure and purchasing a saxophone is a big deal. My friend Max Wright provides some insight in this multi-part series.
According to Max, there are three main considerations when looking to purchase a saxophone. The first one is deciding on the saxophone itself. Do I buy a new or used saxophone? Do I know someone who has a saxophone laying around, that is not being used?
The second consideration is the mouthpiece, which has a lot to do with your end goal. Do you want to perform in a community band? Maybe a jazz band or perhaps simply for enjoyment? The mouthpiece is the part of the saxophone where you blow into it to make a sound.
The last consideration is the reed that attaches to the mouthpiece. This works in combination with the mouthpiece to make the sound we all love to hear. By itself, it sounds like a duck call, but attached to the sax, is music to my ears. Reeds come in a lot of choices, including natural cane or synthetic (man-made material). Both reed types have their pluses and minuses.
